Howard Dixon grew up in England and first visited Canada as a W.H. Rhodes scholar in 1961. After completing a joint honours degree in mathematics and physics at the University of London, and a Certificate of Education at Cambridge, he went on to teach physics at St. Peter's School, York. Howard returned to Canada in 1968 to teach, initially at Lower Canada College, and later at Shawnigan Lake School. His fifteen-year career in education culminated in four years as Headmaster of Queen Margaret's School in Duncan.
Howard's financial training started in Shawnigan Lake with a position as a rural agent for the Mutual Life of Canada. Over a five-year period, he studied extensively in financial planning and built up a clientele in the Cowichan Valley. He served as chairman of the Shawnigan Lake Advisory Planning Committee when it developed its community plan.
Howard moved to Victoria in 1985, qualified as a Chartered Financial Planner, and began his own financial planning practice in 1987. Starting in 1994, he worked for two years as a senior Financial Consultant for MD Management, doing financial planning exclusively for physicians, and became a Registered Financial Planner in 1996.
Howard has a broad range of interests including rugby, cricket and dancing, and he admits to a lifelong love affair with vintage cars and old houses. Currently, he teaches the CFP courses at the University of Victoria, as well as a self-developed professional course called Financial Plan Development.
